iPhone users can use the SaferMe contact-tracing function through Bluetooth with the mobile device GPS system turned off. While proximity detection can be aided by the iPhone GPS system, GPS is optional and only selected by the iPhone user.
Currently Android devices require the GPS system to be on in order for Bluetooth to function and thus for contact tracing to work.
